General
Yes. The Community Edition is completely free with all core features including AI categorization, bank imports, reports, budgets, and invoicing. No subscription, no trial period, no credit card required.
OpenLedger runs on Windows 10/11, macOS (Ventura and later), and Linux (Ubuntu 22.04+, Fedora 41+, and other major distributions).
OpenLedger checks for updates on startup and notifies you when a new version is available. You can also download the latest version from our website at any time. Your data is preserved during updates.
Privacy & Data
All your data is stored locally on your computer in a SQLite database file. Nothing is sent to the cloud unless you explicitly opt in to cloud AI features. You own your data completely.
OpenLedger collects crash reports to improve application stability. Beyond that, no analytics or usage data is collected by default. You can opt in to share additional usage information in Settings, but it is off by default. The app works entirely offline.
Yes. Your data is stored in a single SQLite file that you can copy, back up, or move at any time. The file is typically located in your Documents/OpenLedger folder.
Features
OpenLedger uses a tiered AI approach: first, learned rules from your corrections; then an on-device XGBoost machine learning model; then optionally a local LLM (via Ollama or LM Studio); and finally cloud AI (Gemini, Claude) if you opt in. All on-device AI runs without any internet connection.
Yes. OpenLedger supports QBO, OFX, QFX, and CSV file imports. You can also import PDF bank statements directly. Most export formats from Quicken, QuickBooks, and banks are supported.
OpenLedger supports SimpleFIN Bridge for direct bank connections. You can also import files exported from your bank (QBO, OFX, CSV) or parse PDF bank statements.
OpenLedger is designed for freelancers, sole proprietors, and small business owners. It includes invoicing, Schedule C reports, and the ability to track personal and business finances in one app. It is not designed for larger businesses needing multi-user or enterprise features.
